Slow Down! Don't be Too Quick to Erase

As artists, we are guaranteed to draw lines that do not meet our expectations. As humans, our instinct is to erase them and try again. Well, trust me when I say, stop erasing! I guarantee you will end up redrawing these lines very similarly to the previous ones and actually spend more time correcting than observing your subject. By leaving marks, you are better able to re-evaluate distances and angles, correct more efficiently and learn from your mistakes in the process. If you are up for the challenge, try sketching with a pen. This will really force you to analyze your subject and question what you are doing before committing a mark to your paper. In fact, you are more likely to get it right the first time when using this method but be prepared to grin and bare a few disappointing lines along the way.
