Drawing a Nude Figure with Conte

Step 1: When working with conte crayons, break them into smaller pieces to make it easier to maneuver around the drawing surface while also giving you the ability to create different types of lines and shading.

Step 2: Block in overall pose by first establishing the position of the head, hips and shoulders.

Step 3: Block in remaining shapes with faint strokes as you strive to render accurate proportions.

Step 4: Measure, erase, and correct the drawing as you go along. It may take several attempts but once the correct lines have been established, use the point of the crayon to reinforce the contour of the figure. It is very difficult to form the outline without having to make corrections. Do not worry about making mistakes. Use an eraser to reduce the visibility of any unwanted markings.

Step 5: Add shading using the broader sides of the crayon. Do not forget to shade the supporting surface to connect your figure with the surrounding environment.

Step 6: Survey your drawing for areas needing further definition or refinement.
