Gesture Sketches

In some cases, you may need to convey motion in your drawing. Gesture sketches capture the past, present, or potential movements of living beings. Although somewhat challenging, the following techniques can be incorporated to serve this purpose.

1. Alter the proportions of the body. By increasing the width of a limb or exaggerating the curvature of the back for instance, movement is implied.

2. Include Successive Images: By drawing each figure in a different position along the same plane, movement is represented by its sequential nature.

3. Fading or Eliminating Contour Lines: By fading and/or spreading out the contour of the figure, the effect of vibration or movement is created.
