Drawing Attention to Focal Points

Once the focal points have been determined, the next question you need to ask yourself is how can I draw attention to these focal points? There are several ways in which we can draw attention to our chosen focal points. Perhaps the most common method is to include considerably more detail in these areas compared to other areas of the drawing. Alternatively, we can increase tonal contrast in these areas by drawing with a broad range of values. For instance, we can incorporate more intense shades of gray or add color around focal points, especially when the drawing is rendered in predominantly neutral tones. By enhancing detail and/or contrast, the eye is naturally pulled in that direction. Additionally, one can utilize an interesting variety of shapes to attract the eye.

Below are two photographs which demonstrate the different ways to draw attention to focal points outlined above.
