Eye Level Drawing
Apart from the placement of subjects, another important
consideration when designing your composition is
determining its eye level or point of view. The
viewpoint affects the angle at which subjects are seen
and consequently the shapes and features viewable. A
different image is thus created from each viewpoint.
When it comes to determining the point of view of the
piece, first consider the height at which you place your
objects. Ask yourself: Would these elements look better
if seen from above or would the composition be enhanced
by lowering my eye level? Would it be better yet if the
objects where placed at eye level? Although it may sound
like common knowledge, unfortunately many compositions
are weakened by placement decisions.
