Equilibrium

Whether the figure is in motion or stationary, its equilibrium must be communicated. A well-balanced figure requires at least one foot planted and a reasonably angled torso in relation to the position of the legs. Remember, there are limits to how much a human being can lean to one side without losing balance, therefore keep the line of the neck, hips and feet aligned no matter how much the body twists to convey a proper distribution of weight.

The equilibrium of a figure can be checked by drawing a vertical line of gravity spanning the length of the figure from its neck to the base of the supporting leg. If this line of gravity divides the area supporting one or both of the feet, equilibrium has been achieved and the figure should appear balanced (illustrated below).
