Life Drawing Class Format

The format of a life drawing class is structured but flexible. Depending on your experience and personal objectives, you can set your focus and allot time accordingly to suit your own goals. If a certain pose does not meet your objectives, take a break, listen to some music on your headphones or simply close your eyes and take the opportunity to relax. Below is an example of a typical life drawing class format

Warm-up: 5 x 2 minute poses

During these brief poses, the idea is to relax your mind, body and drawing hand, beginning with basic shapes and lines. It is also the time for warming up your hand-eye coordination with quick sketches that simply block in a small section of the model´s pose.

Section 1: 4 x 5 minute poses

Block in small sections of the model´s pose, add minimal detail and refine form with basic shading.

Break: 15 minutes

Section 2: 3 x 10 minute poses

Block in larger sections of the model´s pose, adding as much detail and shading as time and skill permit. Alternatively, focus on a smaller section and sketch with greater attention to detail.

Break: 15 minutes

Section 3: 3 x 20 minute poses

Sketch entire pose, adding as much detail and shading as time and skill permit.
